Workshop: Introduction to CQPweb
Date: 18 September 2008 Time: 14.00-16.00 pm
Linguistics and English Language workshop:Introduction to CQPweb
CQPweb
CQPweb is a new corpus analysis tool. It is designed as a clone of the popular BNCweb system, but unlike BNCweb, it can be used to analyse any corpus. CQPweb was developed at Lancaster to support teaching and research on corpus-based analysis and its interdisciplinary applications.
The workshop
Unlike many software tools, it requires no set up by the user. CQPweb offers a quick route to fast, powerful searches of very large bodies of text, particularly suitable for use by beginners or in teaching.
In this hands-on introduction to the system, we will look at some of the basic (and one or two not-so-basic) options for analysis opened up by CQPweb. This will include:
- Basic corpus searches
- Collocations
- Viewing distribution graphs
- Creating and using subcorpora
- Using grammatical and semantic tagging
- Analysing keywords and key categories
This workshop is targeted particularly at members of staff and postgraduate students who might wish to use corpora in their research or teaching.
No prior knowledge of corpus tools is assumed.
