Grammar of Lancashire Dialect
Summary: The project aims to investigate what makes lancashire dialect distinct from other dialects in the UK. While dialectologists have traditionally concerned themselves almost exclusively with accent and vocabulary, this project focuses on grammar. While seeking to establish the charcateristics of Lancashire dialect, we are simultaneoulsy addressing theoretical issues. The question we are primarily interested in is twofold: (i) how can grammatical variation and change in dilaects be accounted for by linguistic theory, and (ii) in what ways does this variation lead to new theoretical insights.
