LRDG seminar -- Amy Burgess -- Making time and space for learning: the use of timespace to construct identity in two adult literacy classrooms.

In this presentation I will discuss some of the ethnographic data, including fieldnotes and photos, which I have collected in two adult literacy classrooms. I will comment on what these data reveal about the participants' practices of using timespace (May and Thrift 2001) and how these practices function as semiotic resources for the construction of identities. Drawing on the concepts of localising moves and globalising connects (Brandt and Clinton 2002), I will argue that some spatial and temporal practices introduced a separation of the local from the global in a way that made it difficult for the students to make connections between them. I will suggest that, as a result, students' agency in the process of identity construction was diminished. However, my data also reveal examples of some ways in which students achieved a degree of agency by constructing hybrid timespaces.
