British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL) Conference Diary The Linguist List Current Calls for Papers CurriculaAdult ESOL Core Curriculum: This is an interactive website designed to enable teachers to search and explore the ESOL curriculum. National Curriculum Online: This site links every National Curriculum programme of study requirement to resources on the Curriculum Online. Online Teaching and Bibliographic ResourcesCAL (Center for Applied Linguistics): Many online and/or downloadable products developed by the former ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics can be found here. ERIC (Education Resources Information Center): A national information system funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences to provide access to education literature and resources. NCREL Technology in Education website: A resource for learning communities interested in the effective and innovative application of educational technologies. Includes a search engine for publications in the field. Resources in Language Testing: Updated regularly at 2 - 4 monthly intervals, the purpose of this site is to act as a reference guide to language testing related resources on the Internet. Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies: Part of the Learning and Teaching Support Network, it provides UK-wide support and services for higher education in Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies. The Higher Education Academy: the mission is to help institutions, discipline groups and all staff to provide the best possible learning experience for their students. The Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN), which offers expertise and information on learning and teaching issues that cross subject boundaries and also co-ordinates the efforts of 24 subject centres (see Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, above) is now part of the Higher Education Academy. Professional Groups and AssociationsAmerican Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL): A professional organization of scholars who are interested in and actively contribute to the multi-disciplinary field of applied linguistics. British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL): A professional association based in the UK, which provides a forum for people interested in language and the applications of linguistics. British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP): A national organisation of centres where EAP (English for Academic Purposes) is taught within British Universities and providers of higher education. European Second Language Association (EuroSLA): a society for people with a research interest in Second Language Acquisition. International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL: Its mission is to link, develop and support English Language Teaching professionals throughout the world. It has a number of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) that focus in more detail on sub-areas of interest to IATEFL members. The Linguist List: This is a free resource, run by volunteers and supported entirely by donations from the field. It provides information on language and language analysis, runs a mailing list with over 25,000 subscribers worldwide and hosts searchable archives of over 100 other linguistic mailing lists. TESOL: An organisation that connects you to a global community of professionals teaching English as a second or other language. It hosts a variety of Interest Sections (ISs) that focus on sub-areas of interest to TESOL members. Research CentresThe Exploratory Practice Centre: Exploratory Practice is an indefinitely sustainable way for classroom language teachers and learners, while getting on with their learning and teaching, to develop their own understandings of life in the language classroom. It is essentially a way for teachers and learners to work together to understand aspects of their classroom practice that puzzle them, through the use of normal pedagogic procedures (standard monitoring, teaching and learning activities) as investigative tools. The Exploratory Practice Centre is a resource for teachers and researchers interested in this approach to understanding learning and teaching. The National Centre for Languages (CILT): this is the Government’s recognised centre of expertise on languages. The organisation’s mission is to promote a greater capability in languages amongst all sectors of the UK population. The Council of EuropeCommon European Framework of Reference for Languages, Learning, Teaching and Assessment: This document provides a practical tool for setting clear standards to be attained at successive stages of learning and for evaluating outcomes in an internationally comparable manner. See also - the Manual for relating language examinations to the CEF: the aim of this Manual is to help the providers of examinations to develop, apply and report transparent, practical procedures in a cumulative process of continuing improvement in order to situate their examination(s) in relation to the Common European Framework (CEF).
