LUCAS Language Testing Software Development ProjectLUCAS stands for Lancaster University Computer Assessment System. In fact, LUCAS is specifically a language testing system, containing several item types specifically geared towards the testing of language. LUCAS was developed as a DOS-based prototype in the early 1990s, and received a mixed reception from evaluators, with, on the one hand, enthusiasm for its non-reliance on multiple choice items, but, on the other hand, some concern about its rather dated and awkward interface. The development of a modernised Windows-based version of LUCAS with an extended range of item types was funded by Lancaster University's Innovation in Higher Education (IHE) unit. Further information is available from Charles Alderson. |
