Research on Latin and other ancient languages

Computer-assisted conceptual analysis of the Latin Vulgate Bible

In 2001, Andrew Wilson published the first conceptual glossary to a text in the Latin Vulgate Bible (the Gospel according to John). The glossary is based on a computer-aided lexical analysis of the text.

A similar analysis of the Gospel according to Mark is now nearing completion, supported by a small research grant from the British Academy.

Studies on word-length distributions in Latin texts

Andrew Wilson and Tony McEnery have been working on the statistical modelling of word-length distributions in Latin texts:

  • Andrew Wilson and Tony McEnery. (1998). Word-length distributions in Biblical and medieval Latin. Prague Bulletin of Mathematical Linguistics 70: 5-21.
  • Andrew Wilson. (2001). Word length distributions in classical Latin verse. Prague Bulletin of Mathematical Linguistics 75: 69-84.

This work contributes to the Göttingen project on synergetic linguistics.

Workshop on corpus linguistics, ancient languages, and older language periods

In connexion with Corpus Linguistics 2001, Andrew Wilson organized a workshop on 29 March with the theme Corpus Linguistics, Ancient Languages, and Older Language Periods.
