Senior Research Associate
Degree: BA (Athens), Dip. ELT (Cambridge ESOL), MPhil (Cambridge)
Associated research centres and groups: Language Variation and Linguistic Theory, The Corpus Research Group, Theoretical Linguistics - RITL, University Centre for Computer Corpus Research on Language (UCREL)
Current Teaching
My teaching in 2009-2010 involves lectures and seminars on the Corpus Linguistics module of the Thesis and Coursework PhD, and the MA course LING 421 (Corpus Linguistics), and lectures on the BA courses LING 306 (Corpus-based English Language Studies) and LING 204 (Discourse Analysis: Looking at Language in Use).
For details, see here.
Research Interests
My general area of interest is the use of corpus-based approaches in various areas of linguistics (e.g. lexicogrammar, critical discourse studies, sociolinguistics). More specifically, I am interested in conditionals and modality in English, and the implications of corpus-based research insights for language teaching, particularly in the areas of pedagogical grammar and ESP/EAP. I am also interested in collocation-based research, and in exploring the compatibility between lexical grammar and construction grammar.
I am working on the ESRC funded project, The representation of Islam and Muslims in the UK press, 1998-2008 (RES-000-22-3536; Principal Investigator: Dr. Paul Baker; Co-investigator: Prof. Tony McEnery).
I am also working part-time towards a PhD in linguistics at the Department of Linguistics and English Language, Lancaster University, doing corpus research on English if-conditionals under the supervision of Dr. Willem Hollmann and Prof. Anna Siewierska (previously my supervisor was Prof. Tony McEnery).
For details of my previous research work, see here.
Professional activities
I co-ordinate the UCREL Corpus Research Seminar at Lancaster University together with Neil Millar. I was a member of the organising committee and academic committee co-ordinator for the 1st Lancaster University Postgraduate Conference in Linguistics and Language Teaching (LAEL PG 2006).
For details, see here.
Background
Before I became involved in linguistics I worked as an English language teacher and teacher educator. I have designed and taught MA and BA courses in linguistics and ELT, Cambridge ESOL Diploma and Certificate courses for English language teachers, and short courses, seminars and workshops for language schools and ELT publishers.
