Current Teaching
This term I teach Statistics in Language Testing in the MA Language Testing Distance program and Critical Analysis of Social Data in the Thesis and Coursework PhD program.
Research Interests
In the past ten years I have done research in three main areas:
1. Psychological aspects of second language learning. Following up on my PhD dissertation, I investigated the speech production and monitoring processes of second language learners. I published a book entitled Speech production and second language acquisition in 2006 (Lawrence Erlbaum). In 2006 together with Anna Sáfár we started to explore the role of language aptitude and working memory capacity in intensive language learning. I currently work on the issue of how cognitive factors affect written and narrative task performance.
2. Language learning motivation. I was a member of the research team involving Zoltán Dörnyei and Kata Csizér that surveyed the language learning motivation of Hungarian students. We analyzed how motivational factors contribute to the language learning behavior of different groups language learners. I also completed a survey on language learning motivation in Chile, which sheds light on new aspects of the role of self-concept in learning another language. In collaboration with Kata Csizér, we have recently investigated the relationship of self-regulation, autonomous learner behavior and motivational variables in different groups of foreign language learners in Hungary.
3. Language learners with special educational needs. I was the chief investigator of a project that explores the foreign language learning processes of dyslexic students. I have just finished writing a course-book on specific learning difficulties and language teaching to be published by Multilingual Matters with Anne-Margaret Smith.
Potential Doctoral Proposals
I am interested in receiving PhD students in the following areas: psychological aspects of second language (L2) acquisition including L2 speech production and comprehension, cognitive processes of L2 learning, the role of cognitive and affectivevariables in L2 learning, language learning motivation, special educational needs in language learning and teaching.
