PhD Supervision Interests

Richard's research is essentially corpus-based and empirical in nature. Potential PhD proposals are welcome in the following areas: corpus linguistics, contrastive and translation studies of English and Chinese, Chinese linguistics (particularly lexical and grammatical studies), tense and aspect theory, and teaching Chinese as second language.

Current teaching

Richard is the Course Director of Chinese in the Department of Linguistics and English Language. In 2012-2013, Richard is the course convenor for CHIN100 Part 1 Chinese (Intensive). He also teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate modules LING103 Linguistics, LING200 Reseachng Language, and LING401 Research Methods in addition to doctoral student supervision.

Research and scholarly activities

Richard's major research interests cover corpus linguistics, contrastive linguistics, translation studies, Chinese linguistics, English language and linguistics, tense and aspect theory, and teaching Chinese as a second language.

Richard has launched a well-received international conference series, Using Corpora in Contrastive and and Translation Studies (UCCTS), with the first two conferences taking place in June 2008 (UCCTS1) and July 2010 (UCCTS2) and the third to be held jointly with the 7th International Contrastive LinguisticsConference (ICLC7-UCCTS3) in July 2013.

Richard is currently the External Examiner for the postgraduate programmes MRes in Translation Studies and the MSc in Translation Studies with TESOL at the University of Stirling, and for MA Chinese/English/Chinese Translating and Interpreting at Salford University. He has examined PhD these as an external examiner for the University of Manchester, the University of Western Australia, and London University.
