Current Teaching

I currently teach on the following courses:

Discourse Analysis (LING 204)

Corporate Communication (LING 214)

Introduction to Discourse Studies (LING 442)

Research Interests

In general, my research is in the area of cognitive critical discourse analysis, with a focus on analysing collective identity in different discourse domains, e.g. corporate, political or religious. I also work in the area of language, gender and sexual identity, and a special research interest of mine is metaphor theory and analysis. For the latter, I regularly include corpus linguistic methods in my work. I am keen to develop and strengthen interdisciplinary links with researchers in management theory.

Beyond academia, my research and teaching benefits from and informs seminars I have co-facilitated for the British Academy of Management, my role as course consultant for the Foundation Degree and BA Communication at Work at Blackpool and The Fylde College, and the freelancing work that I do for consultant company Linguistic Landscapes.

Potential Doctoral Proposals

I regret that I cannot take on any new PhD students at the moment.

Career details

I received my PhD in English Linguistics from the University of Vienna in 2003 (thesis on metaphors in business magazines). Before joining Lancaster University in 2004, I worked at the Department of English Business Communication at Vienna University of Economics and Business.
