Research Interests
The design of systems for facilitating foreign language teacher learning, from macro (e.g., programme) to micro (e.g., workshop) level; foreign language teaching materials design; methodology of foreign language teaching; innovation in foreign language teaching; the applied linguistics-language teaching interface.
Potential Doctoral Proposals
I have until recently and/or am currently supervising doctoral students in the areas of second language literacy practices in higher education, teacher cognition, electronic whiteboard technology, self-efficacy in language learning, continuing professional development, expertise in materials design and in materials evaluation, the role of the teacher in content-based instruction, and attitudes towards English as an International Language in 'TESEP' settings. My own main current research interests are language teaching materials and methodology, language teacher learning, the management of innovation in language education, and the applied linguistics/language teaching interface. However, due to my imminent retirement, I regret that I am no longer able to accept any further PhD students.
Additional Information
I joined the department in 2001, after working in the university's Institute for English Language Education (IELE) for a number of years. I have also held posts in Sierra Leone, Kuwait and Thailand, run courses in many other parts of the world and acted as a consultant to several major ELT development projects. My publications include Interface (Longman), ESP: A Learning-centred Approach, Study Tasks in English (both Cambridge University Press), A Review of Research into Needs for English for Academic Purposes (ETS), two edited volumes of papers and a number of journal articles.
