In my reserach I focus on second language acquisition. I am particularly interested in cognitive processes of memory and attention underlying language learning. I wrote my thesis on task complexity and interaction during task-based L2 performance at the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands). As a post-doctoral researcher at Mannheim University (Germany) I focused on preschool teachers' language training competences. Currently, I work on projects about the external validation of task complexity, on priming during task-based computer mediated communication, and on the validation of an IELTS writing test. In all those projects I have started to use our eye tracking lab.

PhD Supervision Interests

I am interested in supervising PhD theses in the area of second language acquisition. In particular, I would be interested in (psycholinguistic) projects about tasks, priming, learner-learner interaction, and computer mediated communication (CMC) that make use of our lab (eye tracking, E-Prime, InputLog a.s.o.). I may work on the source/target languages German, Dutch, French, Italian.

Research Interests

  • Second language acquisition (SLA)
  • Task-based language teaching (TBLT)
  • Language pedagogy
  • Psycholinguistics

I am the organisor of the Second Language Learning and Teaching research group (SLLAT). We meet several times a term for invited talks and discussions of current topics in SLA and L2 pedagogy.

Current Teaching

I usually teach within the MA TEFL/TESOL and Language Testing. For example:

  • LING411: Second Language Acquisition
  • LING407: Task-based langauge teaching (also in Hong Kong as LING407d)
  • LiNG408: Instructed Second Language Acquisition
  • LING507: Research Issues in Applied Linguistics

I also teach some lectures in the BA Module LING103 (Second Language Acquisition, Language Disorders).

I've recently joined Luke Harding as a Director of Studies for our Hong Kong based MA TESOL.
