The University Centre for Computer Corpus Research on Language builds, enhances and conducts research with electronic corpora. The Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science (CASS) is now open at Lancaster University.

This research cluster produces some of the department’s most influential and most cited research. Groups include Language, Ideology and  Power and the Pragmatics and Stylistics Research Group.

Many PhD applications are made to this research cluster, which has developed several approaches distinct to Lancaster. Groups include the Language Testing Research Group and Second Language Learning and Teaching Research Groups.

The Literacy Research Centre works to understand the role of literacy in all areas of social life and to improve communication and collaboration between researchers and practitioners.  The Literacy Research Discussion Group holds a lively weekly programme of events.

Gender and Language

Other research groups

Our Phonetics Lab has state-of-the-art equipment. Research in Gender, Language and Sexuality is a regular discussion forum. Occasional meetings are held by staff, postgraduate students and visitors to discuss other interests such as Cognitive Linguistics.
