Amy Wareing, English Language and Sociolinguistics
Studying English Language and Sociolinguistics at Lancaster gave me the freedom to tailor my degree to my interests. I loved the opportunity to study such a wide range of topics, from ‘Language and Education’, to ‘Bilingualism’ to ‘Corporate Linguistics’. The ‘Language Acquisition and Origins’ module was a particular highlight and I was lucky enough to investigate this further through my dissertation topic. I analysed phonological production errors in young children which really sparked my interest in pursuing a career in Speech Therapy. Having recently shadowed a Therapist, I was pleased to see that the data collection element of my dissertation shared many similarities with the assessment used in the clinic. I am thrilled to have been accepted to study an MSc in Speech and Language Sciences at UCL and certain that my degree from Lancaster was an invaluable factor in securing this place
Ellie Aston, Sociolinguistics
The staff here at LAEL are both incredibly supportive and really interested in the subjects they teach; I've had a lot of very engaging lectures and discussions with my tutors, which has helped me to become increasingly passionate about my degree. In addition the flexibility of the degree schemes with LAEL also means that you can study where your real interests lie, which has been particularly beneficial for me.
Ella Jeffries, Linguistics
All the lecturers and staff were welcoming and friendly and there was a real sense of belonging to a community. The course itself (BA Linguistics) covered a wide range of interesting topics and I have come away feeling that I have a broad understanding of linguistics which has made me want to learn more!
Robyn Woodrow, English Language
The BA English Language course at Lancaster is remarkable. There is a large range of modules available, so students can study the subjects most interesting to them; everything from Phonetics and Phonology to the language of Advertising. The LAEL department staff are brilliant, and very enthusitatic about their subjects which makes their teaching very engaging. Our LAEL department ranks highly amongst other top UK universities and I love the LAEL's strong sense of community. I really enjoy studying amongst students equally as passionate about English Langauge as I am and would encourage lovers of English Langauge to come and study at Lancaster.
Sam Taylor, English Language and Linguistics
Last year, I took a combined degree scheme of English Language and Linguistics which I really enjoyed. The course was well organised which made it easy to understand and we received all the lecture topics at the start of the year, which helped us to find the books we needed in advance.
The seminars where always useful to help clear up any questions we had about the lectures and the seminar teachers were friendly and always willing to help. Overall, the course was challenging and enjoyable and was set out in a manner which allowed us to interact with what we were learning and add our own thoughts and opinions. I would definitely recommend the course.
Jessica Jennison, Linguistics and Spanish Studies
I love Linguistics, which is great because it means I get to spend my time doing something I truly enjoy. Writing essays, revising and sitting exams are made so much easier when you’re studying a subject you’re actually passionate about. Every day you learn something new which builds on what you learnt from the day before. What’s more, the lecturers are just as enthusiastic and are always ready to help you out if you need it and the lectures themselves are interesting, clearly structured and really beneficial. Honestly, I never want my degree to end!
Ben Winterton, English Language and Literature (combined major)
In education terms, the Linguistics and English Language department has really defined my experience at Lancaster University. The staff are friendly and engaging, but are also key figures in their respective fields, which really gives you the sense that you are actively learning the most important and up-to-date elements of your courses.
