High quality teaching

Our Department is the largest of its kind in England, with more than 30 full-time lecturing staff, many Research Associates, and a strong community of around 170 PhD students.

We have a thriving research environment organised around five research clusters, and a number of research centres and smaller groups. Two of our members of staff are national Teaching Fellows, and our research was graded '5' in the last Research Assessment Exercise.

We pride ourselves on high quality teaching - we like our students to have access to our research through our teaching. New ideas and developments feed directly into what our students learn. Our full-time teaching staff come from a variety of backgrounds. All are experienced university-level teachers and all full-time teaching staff hold doctorates (Ph.D. degrees).

We are delighted that the Department  has been rated as 10th in the world in the QS 2013 rankings. In the 2014 Complete University Guide we are ranked top in the North West for Linguistics and in the top 8 in the UK. We also scored 96% in the latest National Student Satisfaction Survey.

A flexible programme

A key feature of all degree schemes at Lancaster is their flexibility. You take three subjects in your first year, then build on one or more of these in your second and third years when you can choose a wider range of courses. You will be admitted to 'major' in a particular subject, but are allowed to change at the end of your first year if you decide you are better suited to one of your other subjects.

Excellent learning resources

Our Department has its own well-equipped computer laboratories with up-to-date technology for teaching and research. We have a Phonetics Lab based in a dedicated room in County South dedicated to research and teaching in phonetics. We also have our own audio-visual resources digital recorders, transcribing machines and video & DVD players). We offer web-based courses as well as lecture-seminar courses. The library boasts a substantial and rich stock of Linguistics and English Language related books, journals and other materials. The Departmental also has a multimedia library of its own from which students can borrow a wide range of resources.

An environment to support your studies

Our department is a very pleasant and sociable place with friendly staff and high quality resources for teaching and learning. Your fellow-students at Lancaster will be a culturally and linguistically diverse group of people of different ages and backgrounds.

Lancaster is probably one of the UK's greenest universities. Stay on either our park-like campus or in the historic city of Lancaster. Find out more about living in Lancaster.
